Montana’s Quiet Revolution: How Republicans Became the True “Party of the People”

May 5, 2026

In the 1970s, 80s, and 90s Democrats were seen as the party that fought for working Montanans. Today the numbers — and the organized left — tell a very different story.

Montana’s Quiet Revolution: How Republicans Became the True “Party of the People”

or decades, many older Montanans remember when the Democratic Party was viewed as the “party of the people.” In the 1970s and 1980s Democrats held the governorship for 20 straight years and dominated much of the legislature. They positioned themselves as champions of working families, miners, loggers, farmers, and everyday Montanans.

But the playing field has changed dramatically.

The Democratic Party has moved sharply to the left. In its place, openly socialist organizations have stepped in to push a far-left agenda across Montana — especially right here in the Gallatin Valley.

The Bozeman chapter of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has been active for about eight years and continues to grow. They openly advocate for democratic socialism and have been involved in local campaigns around housing, food distribution, and tenant organizing in Bozeman. Western Montana DSA (centered in Missoula but reaching across the western part of the state) is also active and expanding. These groups are not shy about their socialist goals — and they are working hard to influence local policy in Gallatin County.

Meanwhile, Republicans have become the party that actually delivers for working Montanans.

In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump won Montana with 58.4% of the vote — a commanding 19.93-point margin. Montana has voted Republican in every presidential election since 2000 except one. Republicans now hold every statewide elected office and have controlled the legislature for most of the last 30+ years.

The contrast is clear:

While socialist organizations push big-government policies that raise costs and limit freedom, Republicans are focused on protecting jobs in mining, agriculture, and energy; keeping taxes low; defending the Second Amendment; and preserving the Montana way of life.

Montana didn’t leave the Democrats.

The Democrats left Montana — and moved toward socialism.

As we head into the June 2 Republican primary, the choice is simple. Support candidates who put Montana families, workers, and rural communities first.

The Republican Party is now the party of the people — and the numbers don’t lie.

Vote Republican on June 2 and keep Montana red.
